Revisiting trends in morphology of antennal sensilla in scarabaeoid beetles

چکیده

Abstract Phytophagous scarab beetles associated with angiosperms have characteristically enlarged lamellate antennae and exhibit a striking morphological variation of sensilla. In this study, we compared the morphology antennal surface 62 species Scarabaeoidea using SEM microscopy, particularly also in light their evolution association angiosperms. We investigated correlation sensilla morphology, i.e., structure distribution, diversity lineage diversification rates. A high was observed but multiple transitional forms, even on same antennomere. interpreted as evidence for evolutionary plasticity. recognized clear patterns convergence repeated certain types placoid One main tendency found phytophagous Pleurostict chafers shift from trichodea to placoid-like sensilla, apparently enhanced by increase surface, either size or number lamellae. This trend occurred not only Pleurosticts, Glaphyridae, second angiosperm-associated Scarabaeoidea. However, our results suggest no direct relation between rate general origin could be explained species-poor lineages possessing otherwise successful rich groups having (e.g., dung beetles). Results further reveal need refine current phylogenetic hypotheses more comprehensive taxon sampling expand molecular characterization pheromones odor binding proteins better understand role chemical communication diversification.

Larval antennal sensilla in water-living insects.

An overview of larval antennal sensilla in hemimetabolous and holometabolous water-living insects is given by updating current knowledge on the fine structure of these sensory systems. In the absence of successful electrophysiological studies, the possible function of sensilla is deduced from their architecture. Various kinds of sensilla are described in hemimetabolous insects, such as Ephemero...

Morphology and Ultrastructure of Antennal Sensilla in Male and Female Agrilus mali (Coleoptera: Buprestidae)

The apple buprestid beetle, Agrilus mali Matsumura, is an invasive pest causing significant damages to rare wild apple forests of Xinjiang. The morphology, abundance and distribution of antennal sensilla in both sexes of this pest were examined. We found that the antennae of A. mali females were longer than those of males. Five types of antennal sensilla were characterized, including trichodea ...

Morphology and distribution of antennal multiporous gustatory sensilla related to host recognition in some Trichogramma spp

Trichogramma spp. (Hymenoptera Trichogrammatidae) are endoparasitic wasps that attack the eggs of mainly Lepidoptera species. The morphology of the antennal multiporous gustatory sensilla of five Trichogramma species is studied and compared: Trichogramma cacoeciae Marchal, Trichogramma chilonis Ishii, Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura, Trichogramma turkestanica Meyer, and Trichogramma sibericum...

Ultrastructure and morphology of antennal sensilla of the adult diving beetle Cybister japonicus Sharp

The morphology and distribution of the antennal sensilla of adult diving beetle Cybister japonicus Sharp (Dytiscidae, Coleoptera), have been examined. Five types of sensilla on the antennae were identified by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Sensilla placodea and elongated s. placodea are the most abundant types of sensilla, distributing only on the...
